One of the secret tricks we romance writers employ is stealing. Yup, we are outright thieves. We should be locked up. The thievery we engage in is not plagiarism (although in my opinion, that should be a punishable offense) but for stealing the likenesses of actors and actresses to play the parts in our heads while we write.
For instance, the character of Sarah Forrester in If I Fall is one who has been through the emotional wringer. Dumped by a duke at the end of Follow My Lead, she transforms herself into the Golden Lady – the pre-eminent leader of the ton – to survive socially and to protect her fragile heart. She needs to be someone with a strong resolve, a will of iron that protects a vulnerable core. And in my mind, that is typified by Carey Mulligan.
Fragile yet strong, emotional but brave, Carey Mulligan has it all – not to mention one of the best elevator kisses in the history of cinema in Drive. She can convey so much with a single glance. But just whom should she be conveying meaning to? Who is her – er, I mean, Sarah’s – match?
Lieutenant Jackson Fletcher of his majesty’s Navy, is a quiet man, but when he does speak, he gets his point across without any dithering. He’s long and lean from years aboard a ship – not to mention kissed by the sun. And he can make a lady feel like she is the only person on earth.
Who better for this than Taylor Kitsch?
And here’s another one just for fun:
I’m waiting for the day that properly British Carey Mulligan is swept away by sinfully handsome Taylor Kitsch in a blockbuster movie, but until that day, they live happily in my mind in the roles of Sarah and Jack. But what about other characters in If I Fall? Well, Marcus and Phillippa Worth (from Revealed) are London’s power couple of the day, and they take Jack and Sarah under their respective wings. She’s smart and sophisticated and he’s… well, he’s the quintessential funny, nice guy. And tall. And in my mind, they are Rosamund Pike and David Tennant.
So now it’s your turn – if you could cast anybody in any romance novel, who would it be? Let me know, and I’ll chose one lucky commenter to win a copy of If I Fall! (US and Canada only)
Happy Reading everyone!
