One of the secret tricks we romance writers employ is stealing. Yup, we are outright thieves. We should be locked up. The thievery we engage in is not plagiarism (although in my opinion, that should be a punishable offense) but for stealing the likenesses of actors and actresses to play the parts in our heads while we write.
For instance, the character of Sarah Forrester in If I Fall is one who has been through the emotional wringer. Dumped by a duke at the end of Follow My Lead, she transforms herself into the Golden Lady – the pre-eminent leader of the ton – to survive socially and to protect her fragile heart. She needs to be someone with a strong resolve, a will of iron that protects a vulnerable core. And in my mind, that is typified by Carey Mulligan.
Fragile yet strong, emotional but brave, Carey Mulligan has it all – not to mention one of the best elevator kisses in the history of cinema in Drive. She can convey so much with a single glance. But just whom should she be conveying meaning to? Who is her – er, I mean, Sarah’s – match?
Lieutenant Jackson Fletcher of his majesty’s Navy, is a quiet man, but when he does speak, he gets his point across without any dithering. He’s long and lean from years aboard a ship – not to mention kissed by the sun. And he can make a lady feel like she is the only person on earth.
Who better for this than Taylor Kitsch?
And here’s another one just for fun:
I’m waiting for the day that properly British Carey Mulligan is swept away by sinfully handsome Taylor Kitsch in a blockbuster movie, but until that day, they live happily in my mind in the roles of Sarah and Jack. But what about other characters in If I Fall? Well, Marcus and Phillippa Worth (from Revealed) are London’s power couple of the day, and they take Jack and Sarah under their respective wings. She’s smart and sophisticated and he’s… well, he’s the quintessential funny, nice guy. And tall. And in my mind, they are Rosamund Pike and David Tennant.
So now it’s your turn – if you could cast anybody in any romance novel, who would it be? Let me know, and I’ll chose one lucky commenter to win a copy of If I Fall! (US and Canada only)
Happy Reading everyone!

It definitely is one of the oldest tricks in the book employed by authors! One of the first things I do when I sit down to write a book (or before) is look at hot men... I mean look at various actors and actresses that might fit the role of my characters.
when the art department is asking for character descriptions, I never write it out... blue eyes can be ten different things/shades to ten different people. I always send pictures of actors.
Fantastic blog! Thank you for stopping by the dark walk!
Hi, Kate! I know I'm unusual, but I never think of actors when I create my characters--in fact they're a little fuzzy sometimes even to me. But in my latest wip, I'm thinking of a younger Clive Owen for my hero. For anyone's hero. Yum!
I don't picture the character as any of today's hunks. They are a mix of however the author chooses to describe them in the book. I do, however, like your choices.
Great choices, Kate!! And great blog. :)
I picture Ellen Page as my current heroine. And my current hero is Chris Helmsworth. Yum.
I'm pretty terrible about remember faces/names, so I don't tend to do my own mental casting. I do like looking at photos of who the author had in mind though--it's fun to see how she envisioned her characters! I tend to imagine them more in generalities rather than with specific features...
Co9ngratulations on the new release. When I read a book, I don't cast the characters unless the description is really close to someone famous.
I just found this blogg today!! I love it. Thank you.
I take what informatin the author give me and my own likes and wants ;) and picture the hero!
Crystal
I don't know of any one of today but I wouldn't mind seeing Tom Selik...
I am not writer... *sigh* but if I could, I would make JJ Feild my hero and (although I hate to imagine anyone with him ;) ) I would probably choose Kate Winslet...
My choices have been cast as a couple before in the tv show Lost, Elizabeth Mitchell and Josh Holloway. He is tough but tender, she is smart but vulnerable..what more could you ask?
I would love to cast Henry Rollins as a hero. I am honestly torn on who I'd choose as me heroine. But Oh, swoonie times for henry !
Hi Kate, thanks so much for guest blogging with us again! I always love to cast characters whether I'm writing or reading a book. David Tennant is handsome and has that magnetic quality about him--very good choice. ;)
And the cover for IF I FALL is to die for gorgeous!
Off topic, but has Alyssa Papas link been hijacked?
Very nice, I love your cast of characters. Thank you for visiting us!
It's funny, when I read a book I never think of anyone famous. I pay attention to the author's description and then envision the hero or heroine. That said, I have a major crush on Nathan Fillion.
Nice casting. I'd cast Joe Manganiello and Isla Fisher.

bn100, I used Joe Manganiello for my hero, Leo, in wicked nights! That man is so fine!
I don't usually picture any particular person as characters in the books I'm reading, letting the author's description and my imagination work together to create the person. Exceptions being when I have seen a movie before a book, or, like with the Harry Potter series, the cast tends to blend in a bit with the rest of the book series.
When I am writing, I don't usually have actors set as characters, though there is one character where a singer is very familiar to how I picture her.
I do love casting characters for movie roles, but those cast roles are still not entirely the characters I imagine in my head. :)
Debbie, thanks for bringing that to my attention. I actually don't use that website anymore and didn't renew the hosting, so I'm not sure if somebody else did? Anyway, I've corrected the link of the Vixens page so it redirects you to the correct site, etc.
Nice blog created by the blog owner I like this post. It is very informative and attractive also I would like to come at this blog again and again.

Sometimes, I actually get a story idea because I am so excited by the performance of a particular actor. After watching Jonathan Rhys Meyers in The Tudors, a sexy contemporary story idea popped in my head. More recently, a performance by Michael Fassbender sparked an idea for a historical romance.
I love the David Tennant and Rosamund Pike combo!
Hello if I could have anyone in my romance novel it would have to be the delicious Denzel Washington !
