An Non-Writing Holiday

The last few weeks, I think I have had summertime brain. The writing was...just not. For example, I got back from a fabulous few days at the cottage—lots of time to relax and write between bouts of swimming, canoeing, and hiking with the family. I brought my computer there with me. What did I do with it?

I checked email. I twittered. I used it as a weight to keep the napkins from flying away while we ate dinner on the deck...

I wasn’t even supposed to have internet. In fact, I shouldn’t have bothered trying to connect to anything. But I couldn’t help it. When my roaming computer found a signal, I couldn’t resist the lure.

BUT, I have to admit that those moments of internet were few and far between. Mostly, I read my book—two books, actually—and played with my son. About halfway through the trip, I told myself not to bother feeling guilty that I wasn’t writing. It was too nice a weekend, and we get too few times like this during the year to spend together. As it is, I’m back into a bit of a writing groove now that I’m home.

So, basically, my post today is to tell you that I had a great time on my mini vacation. I even went fishing, something I have never done before even though hubby and kiddo love it. Usually, I’ll sit back in the chair and watch them, shaking my head no everytime they ask me to try it.

This time I said yes, and I caught a fish. Don’t ask me what kind. It was wet. It was wiggly. My husband actually made me hold it. “Put your thumb in its mouth,” he said. “I want to go get the camera.” Ugh. But I’m brave. Everyone be proud of me. I put my damn hand around the damn fish and waited for hubby to come back with the camera.

...Except it started thrashing back and forth, and I think its eyes were bugging out of its head. I was certain it was going to die, so I bent down to put it back in the water. Of course, my son at that point started screaming at me not to let it go yet. “Just one more minute, mommy!”

That’s when I slipped on the wet rocks and went down on my ass, which would have been fine if my ass didn’t then slip even further, right into the water. The fish got away before hubby got back with the camera. But he got a picture of me sitting in the lake.

I’m definitely better off sitting in my chair with a book.

Have you had a nice summer? Do anything really memorable with your families? Are you ready now to get back into a routine of work?

Sounds like you had fun, missie! Glad to hear it.

Ugh! Back to school. Depressing. But this has been an exceptional summer, though.:)

Ah, fishing. Haven't done that since I was a kid! LOL

It's good to relax. I need me some more of that this summer. works crazy busy, writing is crazy busy... need some slow... someone give me some slow...

You must use that scene in a book! So cute!

I think we all need to step away sometimes. For the past 2 days, I've run more errands than typed words. Although I wanted to finish a book this summer, it didn't happen. With one more week before I go back to work, it's not going to happen, either. :)

RKC I'm glad you're smiling. Besides sitting up to my waist in the lake with my family laughing their asses off at me (and it was their fault, I swear they set me up :) we all had such a wonderful time, and I'm really glad that I didn't stress over not getting any of my writing done

Kelly, back to school's going to be fun!!! (I'm a cheerleader for you)

Tiff, you have been working like a madwoman, both writing and in your day job...hope you get a chance to chill soon.

Maggie, you may not have finished your book entirely, but you seriously did a great job, and you took a bit of a break too, which is important.

JK, I'm so glad you had a great trip!

It's been an eventful summer for me. I haven't written as much as I should have, but I've been fending off some family/friends health problems as well as some personal ones. I hope that the fall is less exciting, in all honesty.

But this was such a cute story. And I think sometimes we all just need a little break. :)

Happy to hear you had a good time. And I'm glad you didn't stress over not writing. I get irritated with the writing fanatics who say you must write all the time. Every free moment!

Though we do it because we enjoy it, writing is still a job. And no one would ever tell me I have to do my regular job every free moment. Heck, I don't even do my regular job all the moments I get paid to do it.

A break is deserved and does a body good. Even if that body ends up waist deep in a lake. :)

I've done little this summer. Except eat. And sit. And eat some more. I really need summer to be over or I won't fit through my front door!

Oh, Terri. This strikes a chord in me. This was supposed to be the summer of me seriously dieting (I figure I need AT LEAST a year until Nashville to find the bones under the flab). I gained 5 pounds instead.Grr.

I'm glad you had a great vacation. I hate that summer's over.

Maggie - We can always ask for airbrushing around the middle. :)

Marn, I'm hoping your Fall gets a little more "normalized" as well. *hugs*

I'm looking forward to the same thing. I think I need the calm of routine to be really productive. Having hubby and son at home all day every day is cool for them, but make me a basket case :)

Once everyone gets back to work and school, things always settle down and I can hopefully devote my free time to writing again--and it's not as tiring as vacationing, oddly enough :)

Terri, you're absolutely right. I can't work non-stop at the day job, and I don't know why I expect to be able to do it in my writer's life as well. Taking a break does not mean you aren't committed.

Airbrushing is a good thing.

It sounds as if all three of you had a great time, and you were making memories for your son. What could be more important than taking time for that?

I'm convinced that taking breaks makes one more productive in the long run. I tell myself that every day. :)

That was the BEST vacation story ever!! *ROTFLMAO* Hilarious! I haven't fished since I was 10 or 12, I'd love to go again, just because. Eat some fried fish (see I'm optimistic we'd catch something or maybe I know I'd just go by Captain D's after.)

And I can NEVER resist the lure of the internet if it's available. It's a sickness.

J.K. Coi said...

Janga you're absolutely right. My son is only going to be at that stage where he still wants to do stuff with me for so long, so I better take advantage of it.

Fran, it was fun! I can't say I'll never fish again, but next time I go for the camera and hubby can hold the thing.
