Writing Comfort Zones

Do you have a comfort zone for your writing? Like a particular character type, a storyline? Something that makes life writing a book a little easier?

I do. I admit it. I prefer alpha men. My beta, Thaddeus nearly killed me, I waned to jump out a window far too often (ask Ely, it’s the truth) but now… I’m in my comfort zone writing an alpha boy again.

Let me introduce Richard Mansfield, the Earl of Asbury. He first made his appearance in Hidden Beauty as Rothburn’s friend and also the man who bid on the lovely Jinan. He lost of course, but he didn’t really care since it was but a passing amusement.

Alpha men more or less tell me what they want and I jump to do it. (I'm talking for the story here, not real life.) Alpha men see something they want--for Asbury it's his lovely wife he's been away from for some ten years--and go for it. Beta's need stroking and ego boosters and too much coddling for my liking, even if I do like reading them on occasion. I'm so happy to be writing another alpha. I love my alpha's, they are my comfort zone. Asbury is going to try and pull the wool over my eyes as he seduces his little wife... but he's in for a surprise, she's so much more wicked at heart and will be teaching him a few lessons in seduction.

What themes, character types or other story tidbits do you rely on for sanity's sake?

Sorry. I had to wipe the drool off my face and stake my claim into Asbury. I <3 Asbury!

My comfort zone . . . not together heroines and bastard/bad boy heroes. My heroes always have a trace or two of a-holishness in them---I love redeeming them. Also I write novels in present day. Thinking about writing anything earlier than that is so never going to happen. (Poor Lydia and Oliver.) But I will recycle but change the infamous butterfly scene to use it in currrent WIP.

Yes, not together heroines... but they always come together so nicely for you in the end!

Isn't Asbury perfect!!! *g*

Asbury is awesome! I can't wait to see what his wife has in store for him, though :)

Great picture!
My heroes always think they know what's best, poor devils. The heroines soon disabuse them of that, however. Like Ely, I tend to write wounded, vulnerable heroines. Plucky, though, when necessary.

I can't imagine you writing a Beta but something tells me your Beta is a cut above the rest. Look forward to reading that one!

Like Ely, my comfort is in writing contemporaries. The thought of writing an Historical (or para/fantasy for that matter) makes me queazy. I could see trying something mid-20th century, but that's as far as I could go.

Nice pic and blog!

Ely - So happy to hear the butterfly scene will live on. I loved that scene.

Kris, isn't he awesome? He's too sexy for words...

That's the joy of an alpha male, Maggie... they always think they know what's best... Always... My heroines live to correct them in their eronous ways!

Terri, believe it! I'm shocked myself that I survived the writing of that book.

And Ely... sigh on that butterfly scene... it's a fave.

Love the picture, Tiff!

And, Ely, add my vote for the recycled butterfly scene. The fact that so many of us remember that scene so fondly suggests its power.

My comfort zone is the reverse of Tiff's. I love Betas, and I'm comfortable writing them. On the other hand, the Alpha in my current WIP makes me angry and irritable. I keep trying to get rid of him and find another charming Beta for my heroine, but he won't go away.

I'm going to club Ely for a chance at Asbury. I'm older than she is and have loved Alan Rickman FAR FAR longer.

I love Alphas over Betas...and probably because of the coddling you talk about. *LOL* Although I know some Alpha pouters. They like to be reassured they're awesome, even though once you tell them they're awesome, they smile and go, "Yeah, baby, I knew it all along." *eyeroll* Okay, I love them anyway. It's a flaw.

And I can't wait to see how his wife puts Asbury through his paces. *LOL*

I have to say, I hemmed and hawed about which picture to include becuase I downloaded a TON when I decided Asbury WAS Alan Rickman, totally... he's so dang hawt!

I knew you'd be on the opposite camp as me Janga! Too funny.

Hellion, that's definitely the reason we love them... they are just so manly! LOL

I think that's why I like alphas so much--they are so confident. I spend so much of life, going about, thinking and saying, "Oh, I don't know, should I do this or this? I'm so fat...or I'm so unathletic...or insert your favorite doubting negative here...." But alphas don't Hamlet their way around, should they or shouldn't they, or can they or can't they--they make a decision and DO IT. I just admire that sort of behavior...even if I don't agree with what they're doing.

Dating a guy who Hamlet'd all the time, I'd have to stab him. If I wanted to date myself, I would.

Strangely, women who are confident and alpha and just do it don't appeal so much to me. Mainly because I'm comparing myself to the other woman and realizing I come up remarkably short. I guess it's the competition thing, even if the other woman is in no way competing. Human nature, I guess.
