"What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet"
--William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
By any other name would smell as sweet"
--William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
Sorry, Shakespeare, my names aren't smelling so sweet. What's in a name means a whole lot as many writers know. Right now, I have a couple characters who might possibly need their name changed, but I'm at a loss---none of the names I happen upon seem right. So, I put it to the side and highlight the name to maybe change at a later date.
But, I figure that I have a whole slew of people who can help and throw out suggestions, so here I am. I'll give you a little thing about the character, so that might help you with names.
The only stipulation I have for suggestions is that for the Jackson bros, that they have to be "different" since the firmed names in the book are Portia (heroine), Ramsay (brother), Finn (brother), Lark (mother), and Hunter (dad).
First character up: Gideon Jackson, who owns his own landscaping business. Portia's brother (she has four of them, and she's the youngest, but Gideon is two years older than she). He's charming. Not serious. Dates a lot. A lot. Very joking. I do like the name Gideon, but it might be changed. Example of a Gideon scene that may be in the final draft of the book:
“Whose heart did you break this time, Gideon?”
He flashed a smile. “Who said I broke any hearts? Mine could have been broken, thank you very much.”
“This is the same man who’s managed to date almost all the single women in Burlington in the course of his thirty-three years.”
“I haven’t dated all of them.” Gideon took out his wallet and pulled out some cash. “Maybe ninety-five percent. But not all. If I’d dated all of them, I wouldn’t have any left to date. And I assure you there are many left to date in this town.”
“There’s a name for your sort.”
“Handsome. Charming. Single. Decent job. Loves to take long walks on the beach, if we had one.” Gideon placed the money down on the counter, sliding it toward her. “I appreciate fine art, fine things, and . . . fine women.”
“You’re like some man slut.” She narrowed her eyes at him. “And as far as I know, your taste in women isn’t exactly fine. You date all sorts of women.”
“What can I say. I’m an equal opportunity dater.”
Next character up for possible name change: Jasper Jackson. I love the name Jasper. But there have been too many Jaspers in romance novels that I've read of late (what's up with that?), and I fear Jasper may be too old sounding. Jasper is the second oldest brother, gay and married to his husband Leo. There have been no scenes with Jasper as of yet, but that's because I haven't gotten to a scene where he's had to show up. Remember, I'm a total pantser here.
And for a change of pace: I need a middle name for Roxie, Aubry's six-year-old daughter. Her full name is Roxanne INSERT MIDDLE NAME HERE Riley. I wanted to do "Heart," but I thought it would get too many connotations with Roxie Hart from the musical Chicago. But it should have that type of Hollywood name vibe to it. Just no fruit. LOL. Roxie is a tenderhearted soul with curly, bright red hair, and sea-green eyes.
Last but not least: A name for the one-eyed cat. He's orangey in color and is in the library (his owner is a librarian and best friend to Portia). So far, my choices have gone between Patch, Wink, Blink, Squint, or Cyclops. I'm 85% sure the cat will make an appearance in this book.
Watch me not change Gideon or Jasper. LOL. So tell me, how do you come up with names for your characters? And if you have any suggestions, throw them my way. No name is too stupid; just look at the ones I came up with for this book (Aubry, Portia, Ramsay, etc.)---WTF, BBQ was I thinking? LOL.

I like the name Gideon. I'm still thinking about it though.
And seriously who would have thought Jasper would be popular in romance? Really? No, really??? Do you want a 'J' name? You know me and my love for J names. :)
As for Roxie: Lillian?
Roxie Love Riley
Roxie Light Riley
Roxie Star Riley
Roxie Dream Riley
Do you know when I was on vaca recently the question I got was what are your characters' names? They expected something really romance-y, like Arabella Torrington-Shipley Alexander and Lord Justin St. John Cuthbertson Devere or something. I said Edward and Caroline and they yawned, LOL.
I think soap operas have ruined naming children today. I mean, Ridge. C'mon.
I will address this pressing issue later---must go into work early. Damn.
Hmm, I'll have to think about this. Naming is hard. In my first book I changed the name of the lead character twice. Rhys used to be a Julian, but it just didn't fit.
Ely - naming characters is as hard as naming children IMHO! LOL I think part of the dilemma for me is that certain names remind me of certain people and with that comes characteristics already in place.
I do think it's easier if you've got a nationality to deal with - like Irish or French.
I like Gideon and Jasper. The only middle name that popped in my mind for Roxie was Rae. It is a mouthful though, Roxie Rae Riley.
My characters show up with names. Or I toss names around for about three seconds and the right one comes. I take no credit for this whatsoever. LOL! I'm just lucky they introduce themselves when they show up.
I like this Gideon character, and that name isn't bad, but it doesn't feel like it *fits* him. At least not the guy in that scene there (which is awesome!). The only name coming to mind is Egan and I'm not sure that's unique enough for what you want.
For the middle name, I like Mara. Roxanne Mara Ramsey. I think it's the red hair. LOL! The cat should obviously be Dewey. :)
Tiff, I named him Jasper after one of my favorite authors Jasper Fforde. Finn is after Huckleberry Finn. Portia after the Shakespeare heroine in A Merchant for Venice. And Ramsay and Gideon are names that I just liked and wanted to use. I have a feeling Gideon is going to stay, but who knows.
You know, I am liking your choices, Maggie for Roxie's middle name. I'm gravitating toward either Love or Light especially. I think I might go with Light actually. I like the play on that one.
J.K., I do love the name Julian especially after reading AC's TEMPT THE DEVIL. Seriously, if people haven't read this book---read it now! I do like Rhys too and I can't imagine him as a Julian after reading his book.
Irish, hmmm . . . maybe I will stick with Gideon and Jasper then. Screw it! LOL. But names are sooo hard and if the name isn't "right" the characters don't speak. Usually for me they come with thier names already attached, and it's just me going really?, that's your name? But the rock star interestingly enough went under a lot of variations of names---from Jesse to Sebastian to Aubry (when he finally went that's my name).
Terri, LOL about Dewey. I was thinking of that and then that damn book came out about a real cat in a library named Dewey, so that went out. No on the Egan. I'm really picky on names, and the reason I like Gideon is how it rolls off the tongue in that lyrical kind of way. His name should have that kind of feeling if that makes sense.
Equal opportunity dater? Man slut? Heh. Heh. your fella is a Gideon--I agree with Tiff. After reading Anna Campbell, all Gideons look great to me.
Oh my, that Gideon is just so HAWT! I really like the name, too. It just fits.
Ramsay Light Riley sounds pretty, isn't a fruit-hallelujah!- and it sounds just enough Hollywood to work.
I think the cat should be Wink. It only takes one eye to wink and it's just darn cute.
Now I must go pick up the new AC book. Sounds awesome! Thanks for the rec!:)
I love Gideon. (Jasper isn't floating my boat, but being we're not batting for the same team--or are we?--it doesn't matter. *LOL*) And I disagree: I think his name fits him. He reminds me of Anne Gracie's Gideon, who I think was also an equal opportunity dater.
Clearly the cat is named Lucky. 3
I'm not sure about the middle name. Madeyln? Maxine? Violet? Ophelia? I don't know....
Okay, Gideon is staying.
Roxie Light Riley. Ramsay is Portia's brother. (I'm having a love affair with R's in this book. *g*).
Hellion, funny enough, I almost was thinking about using Ophelia as the middle name but it has such depressing connotations to it, that I decided against it. Plus, the rock star dad/pop star singer (who's dead) wouldn't go a literary route.
I could make Jasper, Sawyer instead? But I think many people will think of the character from Lost and not Tom Sawyer.
These are all great suggestions, everyone! Keep 'em coming!
Pop star singer is dead, who was the rock star's (Aubry) wife.
I like Gideon too, Ely. Jasper--not so much, but that's probably because every Jasper I have ever known has been called Jappy.
Sometimes we get there ahead of Hollywood. An important character (dead, but still important) in TLWH is named Mowgli. I thought it was different when I used it, and there's a reason he's called that. Now some Hollywood baby has the name, but I'm not changing my character's name. I had it first! :)
Yeah, Janga I'm not sure about Jasper either. Though I do love the name. LOL.
Mowgli is yours. But that's funny Ashlee Simpson used it as a middle name for her kid.
What about Heath instead of Jasper? Heath Jackson???
Heath is a good name. But my mind immediately goes to how sad Heath Ledger's death was.:(
Okay everyone, here are the names:
Gideon is staying.
Jasper is now Quinn.
Roxanne Starlight Riley. (I absolutely love the middle name).
The cat is Patch.
Change: Quinn is too similar to Finn, so Quinn is now Quill. It'll work. LOL.
I don't like the name Jasper... sorry. It's the name of a Welsh pony I knew many years ago that took every opportunity he could to drop me on my head (literally). The name brings back memories, and not many of them good ;).
Since he is a man-ho (jk), how about naming him Beau?
