Historically Accurate Hottie of the Week

All right, so Ioan Gruffudd isn't actually a historically accurate hottie. Sue me. Here he is in the role of Pip in Dickens' Great Expectations. As you know, I'm completely gaga over him in the Horatio Hornblower series, too. He has said he's worried that he'll always be connected with costume dramas, and I say, "Yum." There is something about a guy in form-fitting breeches (and I'm not talking about the get-up he's forced to wear as Mr. Fantastic). I know Ioan is married, I know I'm too old for him, I know if I ever saw him in person I'd be a blithering idiot. But I'll not let a little reality interfere with my harmless obsession.

Pip is an interesting fictional character, if I remember correctly from high school English class. I thought I'd pose this question for a change of pace to our HAH pantheon. Which historically accurate fictional hottie would you like to bring to life? Pre-twentieth century literature, please. So, no Rhett, but Romeo's okay (If Ioan is too young for me, Romeo would probably put me in jail. And that ending sucks.).

Any historically accurate dramas you'd like to recommend so we Vixens can check out the calves, thighs and other areas of the heroes? Mr. Darcy in his wet shirt is a given.

I love Ioan in his historical gettup too! He's so well put together... sigh... he was even hot in amazing grace with the aging makeup. Costume suits him so well....

Will be back later with some names to add.

Ooh, Maggie, I LOVE Ioan too. He's the perfect hero in Hornblower. Not that he's perfect - I tend not to like people who are too good to be true - but he's strong and brave and clever and willing to learn from his mistakes. I say long live the IG costume drama!

Oh, man, so many choices. I'd love to see someone really do Byron properly. They either make him a thug, which he wasn't, or a sex-crazed loon, which perhaps was an aspect of his character, or a slimy creep. And surely someone who did what he did had to have enormous brilliance and personal charisma. And I love me a tortured hero and he definitely fits the bill, although sadly I don't think he ever really found redemption as he would have if he'd lived inside the pages of a romance. There's a guy called Admiral Cochran who sounded just SOOO dashing. Apparently he was the model for Hornblower so that gives you an indication:

Oh, man, and I just realize I completely misunderstood the question! It's very early in the morning in Australia. Please forgive me ;-)

Anna, you could say and write anything, we love you so, LOL. Thanks for visiting the Vixens! I've said on my personal blog I want to BE you! And I too think I'd like to see a good Byron biopic. I have a 3 volume Byron biography I liberated from a library discard pile that I haven't had the courage to begin.

Wow, Maggie, that was lovely. I'll have to check out the blog! You'll have to let us know what you think of Byron when you've read the bio. I just feel he was a much more complex man than he's ever been given credit for in any film version of him I've seen.

Maggie, just checked it out. What a lovely compliment! Actually I think there's plenty of room in my corner for more Regency noir. I remember a few years ago, the world was full of light historicals (a lot of fun and something I read and admire but not what I want to read 100% of the time). It's great to see a variety of historical voices getting their places in their sun right now.

Don't worry about it Anna... did you ever see the Byron film with James Purefoy? I can't remember what it was called, and I've not seen it, only seen the hot pictures of one of the hottest men ever... God I love purefoy.

Maggie, I have a bio of him, but the book is massive so I don't do much more than look at the pretty cover right now.

wait a minute... I'm mixing up Brummel with Byron... just hit me over the head with something.... lol

Okay, I lurve Mr. Darcy.

But one of my all-time favorite characters is Hotspur from Shakespeare's Henry the IV plays. I just love his rashness and his love for his wife. He's supposed to be the antagonist... okay, well, he is the antagonist, but seriously Hotspur is hot.

And, Hotspur really isn't the bad guy. I always want Hotsput to kill Hal and change the ending.

Another fictional historical hottie I'd love to see redone is Tom Jones by Henry Fielding. Tom Jones is a Rake, and HF's writing made me LOL at so many parts back in high school.

Freudian slip. Hotspur not Hotsput. Although Hotspur definitely hits the hot spot.

Okay, I'm stopping. I don't even have the excuse of drinking.

Tiffany, I saw MOST of the Brummell movie. I really thought it was awful. JP is beee-ootiful but it just didn't work. Which is a pity - it was such a wasted opportunity. There's an old Stewart Grainger film about Brummell too which is pretty awful. Sigh.

Elyssa, Hotspur is a REAL guy! But yeah, you're right, he's pretty dashing.

Elyssa Papa said...

Well, I'd take both the fictional and real Hotspure. LOL

That's too bad about JP... I'll just have to keep hitting rewind on Rome, Ep.4 Season1 ;) I do love a man that fills out his breeches, but love him more outta breeches...

Costume hottie: Kenneth Brannaugh I probably spelt that wrong) in Hamlet. I had the biggest crush on his as a teenager.

I cannot type tonight. GRRRR.

Tiffany Kenzie said...

That's cause you were thinking of purefoy... :)

Tiffany, I had a crush on Kenneth B too. He was/is such a magnetic actor. Loved his Henry V too. Elyssa, your typos are keeping me entertained. Can one have imPURE thoughts about James PUREfoy as HotsPURE?

I hope Ioan is in historical dramas forever. He has the perfect bone structure for it. *LOL* Watched Amazing Grace last night again; Man, I love that man!

I agree with Anna--I would LOVE someone to do Lord Byron properly. *sighs*
