Seton reminded me in a comment on her blog that I didn't do any show 'n' tell of my new(ish) apartment. I moved into one place last year and then moved again in December (same apartment complex, just to an upstairs area).
But, as I was taking photos via my cell, it got me thinking. Writing or reading for most of us is done in a specific location. One where we will hopefully get the most work--and inspiration done in. Sometimes, both don't happen and we end up watching TV or have it on while we write. I propped up my copy of Sherry Thomas' Private Arrangements next to my computer because this book seriously rocks. I still recall scenes, lines, and characters. I just want to be Sherry Thomas right now: she has a fabulous debut and she's a great writer. So, run, run, RUN to your bookstore this Tuesday.
But back on track, I tend to write in one area. Specifically on my couch where my computer resides on this coffee table in front of a TV. As to noise, it depends on my mood, sometimes I need it and other times, I need everything to be off or on mute. Lately, for this WIP I'm writing (Simone's story set in Africa), I keep listening to "Falling Softly", the Oscar-winning song from the movie Once. But the couch is the most comfortable area in my apartment and more importantly in easy location near three important things: food, drink, and bathroom.
I read in the same place too... on my couch or in that big chair. I need to be comfortable when I write or read, otherwise, I'll just get distracted or constantly get up. It's bad enough that I'll have the Internet up (although I got so much writing done this past Saturday when I closed the Internet window and just wrote all day... maybe there is something to that after all). LOL.
I would post pictures of my bathroom and bedroom, but really you don't want to see either one. And sorry about the quality of photos... my photo-taking ability is not up to par.
But where do you read and write? Do you find temptation only a finger-click or potato chip away?

I write in my room. If I sit in the living room my hubby always has the tv on... I cannot write with background moving pictures, that's why I pretty much gave up tv to write.
I have a big comfy chair in my room that I lounge in and write at, or in my bed with my million and one pillows, my piano when I'm 'thinking' and a bathroom...there is even an outside veranda if I want fresh air [snorts] unlikely with the oversized raccoons wandering around tearing things up.
Not close to my room--kitchen. Dang it. and I'm a total caffeine whore. If it's the weekend, I'm a real lush and look myself in with a bottle of wine.
Ooooo, pictures finally! Is that a MAC? Liking the LR, looks so comfy. And you must get great light in your kitchen from those huge windows.
I mostly write from bed. There is a desktop in the study but I dont use it too much because I almost never use the computer unless the TV is on. They go hand in hand for me. Also, it means heating another part of the house which is a waste of energy. I adore Woolf's A ROOM OF ONE'S OWN.
I love to write on my back porch in my comfy reclining camping chair.
I ,like Tiffany, gave up the T.V. to write and it's so exciting to see how fast my writing is coming along now.
Also, nice apartment Elyssa!
Nice digs, Ely! I write in a small third bedroom in my house, on a PC. We're getting a laptop this summer but I'm a creature of habit. The room serves as a dressing/emergency guest room, but everything in it is mine---books, faux leather chair, clothes, dresser, pictures. I read in here too on the twin bed to get away from the TV noise. Right now it's a bit of a pit---and I only organized it a couple of weeks ago. At least I finally dragged the milk carton full of research files into the closet cause I kept shredding toenails on it!
pfft: that is soooo not a mac ;)
I forgot to say nice pics Ely! You can't look somewhere in my house without spotting toys, I try and keep them in the kids room, but they migrate out...
No, not a Mac. I forget what type of computer it is - maybe a Sony? Yes, I get great light in the kitchen but the LR is more comfy.
Oh, and thanks for the compliments everyone. I can't take all the credit for decorating, my mom and sister helped out.
Ely - I love your apartment. :)
I just wrote about this last week! I'm a wanderer. I take the laptop all over. I can write any place, though usually I write in the family room or on my bed.
Ely, nice place!
I can write pretty much anywhere as long as I have some quiet, which doesn't come easy or often. If I want to guarantee myself some uninterrupted time I pretty much have to barricade myself in the office, but I find sometimes the creativity doesn't flow there. So even though it's tough on my back and bad for my eyes, I'll sometimes write in bed with the laptop, or snuggle on the couch in front of the tv (if it's on hockey or something that my husband is watching, then it's not as much of a distraction because I could care less who's winning the game :)
Love the pics, Ely. As I'm house hunting, I'm consumed with looking at new places, decorating and all that stuff right now. I too love those windows over the table and that couch looks so comfy.
I either write at my desk in my bedroom or on my couch. However, I think I've done more writing at my desk at work. Sshhh! Don't tell. LOL!
I write in bed...or on the living room La-Z-Boy, my laptop propped on my pirate lapdesk. I get more typing in the La-Z-Boy than my room, usually, which is weird, because in the livingroom, the cable is turned on.
I'm not too much distracted by the internet because to do so, I have to dialup. And to do that, I have to perch in an office chair, disconnect the family line, dial up, and balance everything on my knees because the cord doesn't reach across the room to the La-Z-Boy and I'm far too cheap to buy wireless (though it'd be so much faster!) Besides, clearly I have a problem with lurking about--and I'm at work. Imagine my addiction IF I had it at home? For me, this is like me restricting my dessert eating for when I eat out.
